In this unit, students will understand how to compare and round decimals to the thousandths. This unit will build upon prior knowledge of place value and its value to decimals, as well as comparing fractions. It will help students better understand the place value system before they begin performing operations with decimals.
Key Concepts:
Numbers represented as decimals can be compared in the same way as fractions and whole numbers.
Decimals with different numbers of digits to the right of the decimal point can be compared.
Decimals can be rounded just as whole numbers can.
Prior Knowledge Needed:
 Comparing fractions; (Grade 3, Unit 11; 3.NF.A.3b)
Comparing decimal fractions and understanding notation; (Grade 4, Unit 12; 4.NF.C.5, 4.NF.C.6, 4.NF.C.7)
Expanding understanding of place value to decimals; (Grade 5, Unit 4; 5.NBT.A.3)
Units on the Horizon:
Performing operations with decimals (Grade 5, Unit 10)
