In this unit, students recognize the patterns and relationships when counting and exploring quantities within 99. Counting on by ones and tens helps students develop their understanding of the number system. Students recognize patterns when reading and writing numbers and understand that quantities are conserved regardless of how the items are counted. During this unit, quantities will be presented concretely and with the written numeral.
Key Concepts:
As we count by ones, the quantity represented by the number in the counting sequence increases by one because every whole number is one away from the whole number before or after it in the counting sequence.
As we count by tens, the quantity represented by the number in the counting sequence increases by tens.
Quantities are conserved, regardless of how they are counted.
Rote counting through 99 (Rote Counting and Understanding Amount Counted Grade K, Unit 1; K.CC.1, K.CC.2)
Prior Knowledge Needed:
Composing teen numbers, making groups of tens and ones or leftovers. (Developing Foundations for Place ValueGrade K, Unit 14; K.NBT.A.1)
A ten is a bundle of ten ones (Understanding Ten Ones Make a TenGrade 1, Unit 1; 1.NBT.2, 1.OA.6)
Rote Counting through 99 (Rote Counting and Understanding Amount Counted Grade K, Unit 1; K.CC.1, K.CC.2)
Quantities are conserved, regardless of how they are counted. Grade K, Unit 7; K.CC.1, K.CC.2, K.CC.3, K.CC.4, K.CC.5)
Units on the Horizon:
Using place value to read, write, represent, and compare numbers (Grade 1, Unit 8)
Adding multiples of 10 (Grade 1, Unit 11)
Interpreting and using symbols in numeric expressions and comparisons (Grade 1, Unit 13)
