Big Ideas: The same measurement can be represented in multiple ways (e.g. 2 kg = 2,000 g). Organizing information in table format, such as a conversion table, helps to identify values which are not stated or may be "in between" stated values. In this lesson, students convert metric units of mass using conversion tables. In third grade, students measured and solved problems using grams and kilograms; this will be their first experience using both units simultaneously. They will continue to develop knowledge of the size of these units. Students will also learn how to use patterns to identify values in between the measurements on the conversion table.
