Lesson objective: Solve two-step problems multiplying one-digit numbers by multiples of 10.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of multiplication and place value to a real-life situation. Students are asked to decide which teams would be best for the "Name Game" based on the point value for each player's name.

Key Concept students will use:

• Understanding of place value to multiply multiples of 10.

Skills students will use:

• Representing and solving problems involving multiplication and division (Grade 3, Unit 1)
• Using place value understanding to perform multi-digit arithmetic (Grade 3, Unit 3)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they discover patterns in the values of the names. They will notice that the number of vowels, consonants and total letters in each name will help predict which names have the greatest point value. They will also use the predictions to more efficiently complete the task, using more logic than trial and error strategies.

Key vocabulary:

• factor
• multiple
• place value
• product
