Lesson objective: Interpret coordinate values of points in the context of a situation.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with interpreting coordinate values of points in the context of a real-world situation. A coordinate plane is used here because it is the tool on which the points that students will be interpreting are plotted. This work develops students' understanding that the coordinate plane can be used to represent problems and situations.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they interpret coordinate values and determine the relationships in real-life situations.

Key vocabulary:

  • coordinate plane or grid
  • ordered pairs
  • coordinates
  • x-coordinate
  • y-coordinate
  • x-axis
  • y-axis

Special materials needed:

  • graph paper
  • pre-printed coordinate grids
