Lesson objective: Form ordered pairs from two patterns and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with forming ordered pairs from two number patterns and then graphing the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. A coordinate plane is used here because it is the tool on which the ordered pairs will be graphed. This work develops students' understanding that we can locate and name points on a coordinate plane by identifying the x-coorindate and y-coordinate.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 6 (Attend to precision) as they carefully determine the ordered pairs from the two number patterns and plot the points in the correct place on the coordinate plane.

Key vocabulary:

  • coordinate plane or grid
  • x-coordinate
  • y-coordinate
  • ordered pair
  • numerical pattern
  • coordinates
  • line graph

Special materials needed:

  • graph paper
  • pre-printed coordinate grids
