Lesson objective: Identify and plot ordered pairs on the coordinate plane.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with plotting and identifying points on a coordinate plane. A coordinate grid or plane is used here because it is the tool on which students will identify and plot ordered pairs. This work develops students' understanding that we can locate and name points on a coordinate plane by identifying x-coordinate and y-coordinate.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 6 (Attend to precision) as they identify the exact coordinates of points plotted on a coordinate plane and take care when plotting points when given exact coordinates.

Key vocabulary:

  • coordinate plane or grid
  • ordered pair
  • coordinates
  • x-coordinate
  • y-coordinate
  • x-axis
  • y-axis
  • line segment
  • parallel

Special materials needed:

  • graph paper
  • pre-printed coordinate grids
