Lesson objective: Apply knowledge of patterns in corresponding terms in a real-world problem.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of numerical patterns to a real-life situation. Students are asked to generate and analyze two number patterns based on two girls' cookie dough sales.

Key Concept students will use:

  • A relationship can exist between two different number patterns and their matching values.

Skills students will use:

  • generate patterns and identify relationships in corresponding terms
  • understanding of multiplicative comparisons (Grade 4, Unit 6)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they analyze the two number patterns and determine what relationship exists. Students use the relationship to answer questions in the task.

Key vocabulary:

  • corresponding terms
  • numerical patterns

Special materials needed:

  • n/a
