Lesson objective: Apply knowledge of adding and subtracting mixed numbers when analyzing a line plot.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of line plots to a real-life situation. Students are asked to write a story for a school newspaper based on the data collected from observing worms on the playground. 

Key Concept students will use: 

  • We can use visual models and equations to represent situations involving addition and subtraction of fractions with the same whole and like denominators.

Skills students will use:

  • changing fractions to mixed numbers
  • adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with mathematics) as they analyze line plots to solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators.
