Big Ideas: All rates of speed are ratios that compare distance to time. A rate is a set of infinitely many equivalent ratios that can be graphed on a coordinate plane in a straight line. This lesson builds upon students' understanding of rates as ratios that compare quantities with two different units, and graphing points on a coordinate plane. In this lesson, students help Tylan cheer for his friend Jen who is running a half marathon by using her speed to calculate the time she will arrive at each water station. Students create a rate table and graph to develop the big idea that speed is a ratio comparing distance to time. This lesson builds towards graphing linear relationships in grade 8. Vocabulary: ratio, rate, unit rate, coordinate plane, x-coordinate, y-coordinate, origin Special Materials: Grid paper with small squares (1cm squares work well)
