Lesson objective: Practice naming rectangles and hexagons based on their defining  attributes.

This lesson helps to build procedural skills with naming shapes based on their defining attributes. Shape images are used here because the defining attributes of sides and corners can be highlighted. This work develops students' understanding that shapes are named based on their defining attributes.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice #7 (look for and make use of structure) as they relate two new shapes to the structure of previously learned shapes, and name the shapes based on their number of sides and corners.

Key vocabulary:

  • hexagon
  • rectangle
  • sides
  • corners
  • attributes
  • defining

Special materials needed:

  • hexagon, rectangle, and square shape manipulatives for concrete demonstrations, if available
