Lesson objective:  Apply solving multi-step equations to a real-world scenario.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of solving equations to a real-life situation. Students are asked to construct an equation to model a fundraising scenario and then solve for how much money each person made from selling cookies.

Key Concept students will use:

  • Equivalent equations have the same solution, and properties of equality allow us to transform equations into other equivalent equations.

Skills students will use:

  • Solving equations using the same operation on both sides.
  • Simplifying expressions using properties of operations.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with mathematics) as they write and solve an equation to model the total amount raised for the club.

Key vocabulary:

  • equivalent equation
  • like terms
  • solve
