Lesson objective: Apply ability to use two pieces of information to designate a position on the coordinate plane and demonstrate an understanding of its structure.
This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of ordered pairs and the coordinate plane to a mathematical situation. Students are asked to create a coordinate plane, graph points and give coordinates of points.
Students will use the key concept in which they use two pieces of information to designate a position on the coordinate plane.
They will be able to create and label a coordinate plane using an appropriate interval and spacing, plot several points in all four quadrants and on each axis of the coordinate plane, and name the coordinates of a given point.
Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (look for and make use of structure) as they apply their knowledge of coordinate pairs and how they relate to the x- and y-axis that have been extended to include negative values.
Key vocabulary:
- coordinates
- quadrants
- x-axis
- y-axis
Special materials needed:
- scrap blank coordinate planes
