Lesson objective: Compare two-digit numbers using place value.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill in comparing two-digit numbers using place value understandings. Counters are used to support understanding of the quanitites that are represented by a two-digit number. This work develops students' understanding that the meaning of tens and ones help us compare two-digit numbers.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (students make sense of the relationship between the numerals and the quantities) as they organize counters into groups of tens and ones and use place value ideas to compare quantities. .

Key vocabulary:

  • compare

Special materials needed:

  • scoops, counters (e.g. linking cubes, paper clips, tiles, etc.)
