Lesson objective: Compare the value of two-digit numbers using understanding of place value.
Students bring prior knowledge of comparing numbers from K.CC.C.6. This prior knowledge is extended to two-digit numbers as students compare the value of two-digit numbers. A conceptual challenge students may encounter is the importance of understanding place value when comparing two-digit numbers.
The concept is developed through work with representations such as number lines and ten frames which support students in understanding the value of each digit in a two-digit number and how those values are used to compare two-digit numbers.
This work helps students deepen their understanding of numbers because they deepen their understanding of place value and numerical value.
Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Students continue to explore the structure of place value) as they use their understanding of place-value to compare two-digit numbers.
