This lesson builds on students’ work with unit rate. Students are presented with a table which shows data from the annual school field trip. By dividing the total cost by the number of students attending, students will recognize that the cost per student remains constant over time. The cost is the constant of proportionality. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build toward students’ future work with constant of proportionality in graphs. Big Ideas: All equivalent ratios have the same quotient which is the constant of proportionality. Vocabulary: proportional relationship, dependent variable, independent variable, unit rate, constant of proportionality Special Materials: calculators
