Lesson objective: Fluently divide negative numbers. Fluently translate between real-life situations and quotients with negative numbers.

This lesson helps to build fluency with dividing negative numbers. An extended example of hiking is used to develop students' understanding that real-life situations can be represented by quotients with negative numbers and that those quotients can take several equivalent forms.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they decontextualize and contextualize rational numbers by translating real-world hiking situations to numerical expressions and identify equivalent representations.

Key vocabulary:

  • ascend
  • descend
  • elevation
  • quotient
