This lesson focuses on examining the text closely to look at how John Smith recounts the events of his capture. Erin Sawyer points out that John Smith's recount is the only source for this event and thus many historians do not believe it really happened. The day begins with an independent rereading of the section "Pocahontas saves John Smith." Following the rereading, students may work with a partner to revisit the text and answer the text dependent questions. The focus question is to be answered independently. Special Materials: Student notes sheet, text.
