Big Ideas: The meaning of addition and subtraction are the same for mixed numbers as they are for whole numbers. Mixed numbers can be decomposed into a sum of fractions and improper fractions. In this lesson, students work with addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators. Students solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers having like denominators by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. By leaving this task open ended, students reason why there is more than one solution to the task. The mathematics in this lesson build toward students' future work adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators. Vocabulary: fraction, mixed number, improper fraction, equivalent fraction, compose, decompose
