Lesson objective: Locate fractions on a number line that is partitioned into a different denominator.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of locating fractions on a number line to a mathematical situation. Students are asked to complete a drawing of a number line labeling both fourths and thirds on the same line.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • When a whole is partitioned into b equal sized pieces, each piece is 1/b of the whole. It takes b of these pieces to make the whole. When we take a of those pieces, the result is a/b.

Skills students will use:

  • partitioning a number line to find fractions (Grade 3, Unit 4)
  • re-partitioning a number line to find distances or lengths with precision (Grade 3, Unit 5)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 6 (attend to precision) as they partition a number line into different size pieces to find fractions with different denominators.
