Lesson objective: Measure lengths and report distances to the nearest whole, half, or quarter.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with measuring to the nearest whole, half, and quarter inch as well as appoximating distances on a number line. Rulers and number lines are used here because they highlight the idea of measuring to the nearest whole, half, or quarter inch by visually determing which it is closest to. This work develops students' understanding that measures can be reported to the nearest whole, half, or quarter inch.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice #2 (reason abstractly and quanitatively) as they connect what they have done with fractions on a number line to using rulers to round fractions to the nearest whole, half, and quarter inch.
