Lesson objective: Measure lengths to the nearest whole, half, or quarter inch.
This lesson helps to build procedural skill with measuring to the nearest whole, half, and quarter inch. Rulers are used here because they highlight the idea of measuring to the nearest whole, half, or quarter inch by visually determing which the object is closest to. This work develops students' understanding that measures can be reported to the nearest whole, half, or quarter inch.
Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (reason abstractly and quanitatively) as they connect what they have done with fractions on a number line to using rulers to round fractions to the nearest whole, half, or quarter inch.
Vocabulary:
- approximately
- estimation
- half inch
- quarter inch
- whole inch
