Lesson objective: Apply their knowledge about arrays to find the total number of objects in a set.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of arrays to a real-life situation. Students are asked to help find the total number of jellybeans in a jar.

Key Concept students will use:

  • A group of objects can be organized in an array and thought of as a number of equal groups.

Skills students will use:

  • addition to find the total number of objects in an array and naturally point out a connection to skip counting (Grade 2, Unit 8)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they understand the structure of an array (rows & columns).

Key vocabulary:

  • arrange
  • array
  • column
  • equal
  • group
