Lesson objective: Practice identifying cubic objects

Cubic objects and non-cubic objects are used here to support student understanding of the attributes of geometric shapes. This work develops students' understanding that a cube, with the side length 1 unit, is called a “unit cube” and can be used to measure volume.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 5 (use appropriate tools strategically) as they decide which objects should be used to measure volume of three dimensional figures.

Key vocabulary:

  • cubic
  • unit cube
  • cubic unit
  • inch cube
  • cubic inches
  • centimeter cube
  • cubic cenetimeter
  • volume
