Big Ideas: The same number can be shown in many different ways. This lesson builds on the prior place value lessons, which lays a foundation for this task. In this lesson, students are asked to represent randomly-generated 3-digit numbers in an abstract way. They may create pictures to help them, but the visual support is not provided as it is in other lessons. Being able to work with the concept of hundreds, tens, and ones in an abstract way sets students up for success with addition and subtraction with regrouping and more difficult 4-digit place value. Special Materials: standard 6-sided dice
