Big Ideas: The area of rectangular shapes can be found by using the length and width dimensions to create the rectangles. This lesson continues to strengthen the concept of area by counting unit squares inside rectilinear shapes. This task uses a scenario in which students will determine the area of various shapes. Students will need to design a bedroom arrangement given the dimensions of 4 pieces of furniture inside a bedroom. Students will be connecting the attribute of length and width of rectangles to the attribute of area in this lesson. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build toward students' future work with multiplying length and width of rectangles to find area. Vocabulary: linear, attribute, area, square units
