Big Ideas: The surface area of a rectangular prism can be found be finding the sum of the areas of the faces of a 2D net. In this lesson, students build on their understanding of area to find the surface area of a rectangular prism. Students are presented with the task of determining if Jessica has enough wrapping paper to wrap a gift for her dad. By drawing a 2D net, students can calculate the area of each of the faces and then find the sum of all the faces to determine surface area.
