Big Ideas:
Any number, measure, numerical expression, algebraic expression, or equation can be represented in an infinite number of ways that have the same value.
Measurements given in large units can be written as an equivalent amount in smaller units by using multiplication
In this lesson the students will apply knowledge of unit conversions in order to solve multi-step problems involving distance in the metric system. They should be familiar with the concept of a multiplicative comparison, which they focused on heavily in previous instruction. They should also be familiar with common metric units.
Vocabulary:
metric, kilometer, hectometer, dekameter, meter, decimeter, centimeter, millimeter
Special Materials:
Meter Stick
Anchor chart with metric prefixes
