Big Ideas: There are multiple strategies to add and subtract. Perimeter is the linear distance around a two-dimensional figure. This lesson builds on student understanding of two-dimensional shapes and measuring distance to develop understanding of additive properties to find the perimeter. This task asks students to solve a perimeter problem knowing the length of one side and the relationship to another side. Students use addition or subtraction to determine the unknown side(s) and then use addition strategies to add the lengths to find the perimeter. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build towards students' future work with measuring to problem solve using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
