Big Ideas: Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Place value allows us to compare values for addition and subtraction. This lesson builds on using rounded numbers to find possible values to add and subtract, This task presents students with a jar of marbles for comparison and for students to figure out possible values and combinations using criteria outlined in the task. Students will round to the nearest 10 or 100 while using addition and subtraction strategies to understand the purpose of rounding numbers. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build towards students’ future work with problem solving word problems by using rounding to make estimates.
