Big Ideas: Number benchmarks are useful for relating numbers and estimating amounts when adding and subtracting. The value of a digits is determined by the place value. We can compose and decompose numbers to add or subtract more easily. This lesson builds on rounding to the nearest 10 using benchmark understanding. Students are presented with a jar of marbles and will compare amounts of different color marbles. Students will round 3 digit numbers to the nearest 10 using addition strategies. This mathematical concept builds towards students’ future work with problem solving using rounding to make estimates and check for reasonable solutions.
