Big Ideas: We can calculate the volume of a rectangular prism by filling the prism with cubes. This lesson builds on students' recognition that a 1 x 1 x 1 unit cube can be used to measure volume. This task gives students experience filling rectangular prisms with cubes to measure volume. Students will both estimate and visually fill prisms with cubes to calculate volume. This task has an optional opportunity for students to cut out the provided nets, build prisms and fill the prisms with centimeter cubes. The task may also be done without the activity. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build towards a deeper conceptualization of volume. Vocabulary: volume, rectangular prism, net Special Materials: supplementary handout provided (optional) scissors (optional) tape or glue (optional)
