Big Ideas: In mathematical relationships, the value of one quantity depends on the value of the other quantity. Mathematical relationships can be represented and analyzed using tables. Using variables permits representing varying quantities. This lesson develops students’ understanding of independent and dependent values. Students use a set of cards to pair a table with a description of a relationship. Students are asked to create pairs and articulate/justify how they know the relationship is the same on the table as in the description. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build toward students’ future work with expression, equations and proportional reasoning in grades 6-8. This lesson is the second of three that can be used together to deepen student understanding. Vocabulary: independent variable, dependent variable Special Materials: Precut the cards for each student or pair of students.
