Big Ideas: We can classify two-dimensional shapes by comparing their properties or attributes. Shapes with the same attributes can be grouped to make a larger category. This lesson builds on students’ ability to recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes. This task requires students to compare attributes of polygons. Students are presented with a set of shapes in which they have to use a Venn diagram to sort based on specific attributes. By understanding these attributes, students then are able to justify their classifications of polygons. Vocabulary: attributes, polygon, plane shape, properties, open plane figure, closed plane figure, Venn diagram Special Materials: Pattern blocks (optional) Printout of geometric figures in lesson A copy of a blank Venn diagram
