Big Ideas:
Area and perimeter describes a polygon's measurements.
Area and perimeter can be found using multiple strategies.
This lesson builds on developing students' understanding of perimeter, area, and shapes' attributes. This task requires students to use strategies to distinguish between perimeter and area. Students will have to make sense of the characteristics and relationships between the shape's area and perimeter. Students will describe, analyze, and examine the perimeter, area, and attributes of squares and rectangles. Students are presented with a shape and asked to use strategies to find the perimeter and the square area by examining the length of the sides. This builds toward the ability to apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real-world and mathematical problems.
