Big Ideas: When solving distance word problems, measurement units need to be converted to the same unit before calculating. We must look at the number and the unit when we are comparing measurements. This lesson builds on students’ previous work with measurement problem-solving involving the same unit in grade three. The task explores metric distance conversions through word problems. Students will convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit to determine whether or not Shyanna has met her swimming goal. Students will discover they must convert to the same unit before making calculations. The mathematical concepts in this lesson builds towards students’ future work with measurement problem solving in grade 5.
