Big Ideas: Dividing a fraction by a fraction involves splitting a part into different-sized portions. This lesson focuses on the concept of remainders when dividing fractions by fractions. Students are given a task where the divisor does not fit into the dividend evenly. Students have to visually represent the left over part or remainder using a model. Students then determine the what value of the remainder is based upon the context of the problem. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build toward students’ future work interpreting fractions when dividing fractions with different denominators. Vocabulary: quotient, dividend, divisor, remainder Special Materials: graph or grid paper unifix cubes
