Big Ideas: Finding equivalent fractions can be used as a strategy to add fractions. Finding a common denominator can help in adding fractions. This lesson builds on students’ work with generating equivalent fractions as a strategy to add fractions with denominators of 10 and 100. Students are presented with different fractions of a pound of various candies at The Sweet Tooth candy store where they must brainstorm different combinations of candies while staying within the weight limit. By generating equivalent fractions, students will be able to find common denominators and add fractions. This lesson builds toward students’ work with fractions in grade 5. Vocabulary: fraction, equivalent fraction, numerator, denominator, common denominator, sum, weight, kilogram, gram Special Materials: Model mat to be inserted into protective sleeves (optional-see supplementary resources) dry-erase markers and erasers (optional)
