Big Ideas: Dividing fractions with the same denominators is the same as dividing the numerators. Dividing a fraction by a fraction involves splitting a part into different-sized portions. This lesson introduces the concept of dividing fractions by fractions. Students begin dividing fractions with the same denominator or working with fractions that are parts of the same whole. The task in this lesson gives students a chance to divide fractions by fractions in a real-world context. Students will need to create a visual model to explain their reasoning. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build toward students’ future work with dividing fractions by fractions with different denominators. Vocabulary: divisor, dividend, quotient Special Materials: grid or graph paper fraction strips or unifix cubes
