Big Ideas: Understand that in order to compare decimals they have to be in the context of the same whole. Decimals can be compared by locating and comparing the position of each decimal on a measuring tool. This lesson builds on students’ previous work with volume in the third grade. In this task, students are presented with decimal dosages of an antibiotic in milliliters. Students must compare each decimal and place it in the correct order in the dosage chart. By using their previous knowledge of decimals, students will compare decimals by plotting them on the syringe. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build toward students’ future work with decimals and measurement problem solving in grade 5. Vocabulary: decimal, tenths, hundredths, comparing, greater than >, less than <, equal to =, volume, capacity, metric, milliliters (mL), liter (L) Special Materials: Task Handout (Print for each child if not using the Metric Model Mat-See Supplementary Resources at end of lesson plan) Metric Model Mat to be printed or placed in a protective sleeve for each student (see Supplementary Resources at end of lesson plan) dry-erase markers (optional) erasers (optional)
