Big Ideas: Place value can be used to create numbers out of groups or bundles of numbers instead of counting by 1s. In order for students to learn to add mentally, they need to apply their understanding of the concrete form of base ten blocks or understand decomposition. Students learn that when they skip count, they can create numbers out of groups without counting each 1.
