Big Ideas: When students are adding and subtracting by 10 in their heads, they need to understand that the 10’s place increases or decreases. Students can learn how to manipulate numbers mentally by building conceptual knowledge of how the number system is based on tens. By representing base ten concepts visually, students will become more proficient at computing addition and subtraction in their heads. Special Materials: Task worksheet
