Big Ideas: Volume is a unique attribute of solids that explains how much space an object takes up. We can represent solids in various 2-dimensionsal forms, including nets which show a solid in its unfolded state. This lesson encourages students to investigate three-dimensional objects in a two-dimensional space. The task requires students to construct a net given the dimensions of a rectangular prism, and it asks students to explore the relationship between nets and volume. This lesson cultivates an even more sophisticated comprehension of volume, as students are required to make sense of the problems, along with being challenged to use what they know in order to look at volume in a different way. Vocabulary: nets, cubic units, construct Special Materials: graph paper or isometric paper
