Big Ideas: Decimal place value is an extension of whole number place value. The base ten system extends infinitely to very large numbers and very small numbers. This lesson builds on understanding developed in fourth grade to read, write, and compare decimals to hundredths, as well as reading and writing multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals and number names. This task builds understanding of writing decimal numbers to the thousandths by using a place value chart. This lesson builds towards future work in fifth grade when students will reason about differences of like place value units and express those comparisons with symbols (>, <, and =). Vocabulary: decimal, decimal point, tenths, hundredths, thousandths, place value chart Special Materials: Place value charts that include tenths, hundredths, and thousandths digit cards 0-9 dry erase boards markers
