Big Idea: The distributive property can be used to express the sum of two whole numbers with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor. This lesson builds on students' work in grades 3-5 with the distributive property and finding common factors of numbers. The purpose of this lesson is to use the distributive property to create equivalent expressions with common factors. This builds towards students' being able to generate equivalent expressions using factors in 6th grade, which will prepare them for using the distributive property as a strategy to compute rational numbers and linear expressions. In this task, students are asked to determine the greatest number of bags that Mr. Spencer can use to package his 36 pieces of blue raspberry taffy and 48 pieces of strawberry banana taffy. The students are asked to write two equivalent expressions that represent the total pieces of taffy and the greatest amount of bags Mr. Spencer can assemble.
