Big Ideas: Unit fractions can be combined to compose a whole. A whole can be decomposed to locate a unit fraction. This lesson builds on students’ work with partitioning wholes into equal shares and composing a whole with unit fractions using area models and number lines. This task requires students to locate a unit fraction by generating a whole and then decomposing the whole into a different number of equal shares. Students will be applying their knowledge of fractions to compose and decompose a whole. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build toward students’ future work with naming fractions on a number line, comparing fractions, and equivalent fractions. Vocabulary: fraction, unit fraction, whole Special Materials: Number lines to compose and decompose (Supplemental Handout)
