Big Ideas: Estimating using benchmark and equivalent fractions assists in checking answers for reasonableness. This lesson builds on students' work with benchmark and equivalent fractions. This task ask students to determine if Ada can go to the store. Students need to estimate the distance to the store and then find the exact distance by adding fractions with unlike denominators using area models. The mathematical concept in this lesson builds toward future work solving ratio, rate, and proportion problems, and prepares students for work with greatest common factors and least common multiples in 6th grade algebra. Vocabulary: area model, numerator, unlike and like denominator, benchmark fraction, equivalent fraction, mile Special Materials: colored pencils (optional)
