Big Ideas:
Conclusions about causation can only be determined through the use of an experiment,
Random assignment of treatments helps reduce the effect of confounding variables.
In previous lessons students have used sample surveys and observational studies to answer statistical questions. In this lesson students will answer statistical questions that involve a causal relationship by using an experiment and investigating the need for random assignment of subjects to treatment groups.
Vocabulary:
experimental design, random assignment, treatment group, control group, explanatory variable, response variable, confounding variable, treatment, experimental units (subjects)
