Big Idea: Two-dimensional objects can be named, described, and classified by their attributes. This lesson builds on students' knowledge of geometric attributes. The task asks students to examine sorts of various quadrilaterals (square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram) to create rules for each shape. Through exploration of the quadrilaterals, students will see that some shapes have overlapping attributes. Their work in classifying quadrilaterals builds towards students' future work in classifying triangles (4th grade) and understanding the hierarchy of shapes (5th grade). Vocabulary: parallelogram, quadrilateral, rectangle, rhombus, square, trapezoid
