Big Ideas: There are an infinite number of ways in which equivalent expressions can be written. Equivalent expressions evaluate to the same value even if they are represented differently. The properties of operations make it possible to rewrite expressions in equivalent forms. This lesson builds on students' prior work with identifying equivalent expressions in 6.EE.A.4 and applying the properties of operations in 6.EE.A.3. In this lesson, students will generate equivalent expressions using the properties with the introduction of negative and rational numbers in their expressions. The launch is meant to encourage students to begin thinking about equivalence. The task extends their understanding of these standards to expressions with rational and negative numbers. Students will sort and categorize expressions according to criteria that they choose. As a result, students will discover that there are an infinite number of ways to write an expression. Students will be able to demonstrate equivalence by simplifying expressions using the properties. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build towards students future work with solving equations in grades 7-8. It also provides a foundation for their work with polynomials and functions in future grades.
